Hippity Hoppity Easter’s on Its Way

I am crazy about the Easter Bunny. “Bun-Bun” my mother called him. Assuming it is a him. When my little sister Duvall got older and started having her doubts about Santa Claus, she remained steadfast in her furry basket-filling friend. “There might not be a Santa Claus,” she declared, “but there SHOR’ IS A EASTER BUNNY.”

She was 35 at the time.

I was going through some old letters (remember those?) the other day and ran across this card my mother sent. Inside she wrote, “Sick, I know.” She was wicked, our sweet mama. Our bunny never had a limp, even after we were grown and out of the house. He still hopped over in the mail, chocolate included. And good chocolate, too, peanut butter eggs and fancy praline ones and all. None of this marshmallow nonsense.

Speaking of of nonsense, I’m in the habit of silly Easter posts. Having inflicted upon you, dear readers,  a series of infantile knock knock jokes year before last, and a riveting treatise on the Easter Bear last year, I see no reason to quit while I’m behind.

Apart from silliness and chocolate eggs (and that’s a big “apart”), Easter is the celebration that life, like my sister’s idea of the Bunny, is eternal. Hallelujah.

Happy Easter. Hope the Bunny finds you.

  1. Love it! Remember dying a dozen eggs and hiding them, only to find 11? Would that one about a day later by smell, not sight!!

  2. That’s such a funny story about Duvall! My daughter was 10 when she figured out Santa. She asked/told me she knew the secret, then she got this perplexed look on her face and I could see the wheels turning. Then, she turned to me and said, “Oh no! Not the Easter Bunny, too!”

  3. Frances,
Your Mom’s friend and ours, Walker Rucker always told the children at the beach cottage…Morehead City on Sunset….”Look for the Faberge egg!” We only turned up the dyed and edible kind. Still looking for that egg! Hey bun bun, I need to talk to you.
Think this quote so great and I don’t know who coined it “I have been putting a lot of thought into it and I just don’t think being an adult is gonna work for me.”
    Happy Easter

  4. One Easter, the exasperated Easter Bunny delivered a pound of bacon to each of our Easter baskets (along with the requisite candy eggs of course)…something about, “Now you girls will finally have all the bacon you want.” Gotta love a bunny with a sense of humor – keep bringing the Knock Knocks and cheesy cards!

  5. We always called it Bun Bun!! When my son was a at Prep school I sent him a bunny one Easter. Next time I went to McCallie to pick him up all the guys had take turns letting BunBun spend the night in their rooms. They are all now in their 40s and remember BunBun stories. Isn’t there that child still in l if us!! HAPPY EASTER.
