Paint the Cotswolds, May 14-19, 2023

Join us this glorious, blooming spring to paint and wander about the Cotswolds this May 14-19. By us I mean virtuoso watercolorist, wonderful person, and workshop teacher Andrew Hucklesby, and me. With our home base as the gracious and elegant Barnsley House and its fabulous gardens, spa, and excellent chef, we will learn, laugh, create, play, paint, and possibly cut up together 😉 Oh, and eat and drink. Mustn’t leave those out.

If there is a prettier or more picturesque place than the English Cotswolds, I do not know it. Embodying the quintessential English countryside, the Cotswolds have also become quite fashionable in recent years, but they have always been an artist’s heaven.

Artists of all levels are invited to our very first four-day workshop in this storied English countryside, taught in watercolor by the aforementioned UK-based Hucklesby and guided by me. Our group will be very small, allowing ample individual attention for each student. Andrew loves teaching beginners, so if that is you, you are welcome! If you are more advanced, you will be delighted by the scenes and the variety of subjects to paint, and you will be amply challenged!

The stately and gracious Barnsley House was once home to Rosemary Verey, garden designer and creative spirit extraordinaire.

Our home for the week is the wonderful Barnsley House and worthy of a trip in itself. The house and its four acres of gardens are the beloved former home of garden designer Rosemary Verey, whose clients included the King of England (when he was Prince of Wales), Princess Michael of Kent, the Hon. Anne Cox Chambers, and Elton John. The house is both elegant and cozy, the food fantastic, and the staff accommodating and professional.

And while we will spend at least one day painting at Barnsley, we will pry you away to ply our craft in the charming villages surrounding.

Some drawing and painting experience is helpful, and practice prior to the trip will serve you well. Otherwise, all you need are a playful spirit and a creative soul. And a few supplies. We’ll send a list of supplies as well as reading, study, and packing suggestions when you sign up.

  1. Frances, this sounds wonderful. I am a complete beginner!! I’m going to see who might go with me. I’ll be prompt. You think of the most fun things!!

  2. Hello! This looks wonderful! Do you have a complete itinerary available? Is transportation provided to/from Heathrow? Thank you!

    1. Hello Karen, and I believe I have replied to you via email, but to answer your questions, and in case this is helpful to others who might be interested, the trip this year is sold out, but there will be others. For this trip, transportation to and from Barnsley or the airport is on you own. As for the itinerary, we will be painting the first day at Barnsley, the second at Upper and Lower Slaughter, the third at Windrush with a special visit to a noted English watercolorist’s home and studio, and the 4th day at Lechlade. All meals and transportation to and from our painting spots are included.
