Madame Matisse in a Kimono, by Andre Derain in 1905, a new loan at the National Gallery. Love this palette!

One of the hot spots on the island of Giglio, which we visited by boat after the parade in Orbetello (see last post) Giglio is a charming old fishing port accessible only by boat, made (in)famous in recent years as the site of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster and disgrace. After 4 years the wreckage was finally removed and you’d never know it happened. .

Surrey with the fringe on top! Crowd favorites in the Cinque Centi parade yesterday in Orbetello, the yellow driven by our friend Daisy Corsini. There must have been more than 100 of these tiny 4-wheelers made by Fiat and recently re-introduced in the American market. So you can have one too. Though these convertible versions are a little harder to come by. @kateholmessnapslanding

The beach at Porto Ercole is still quite busy even in late September , when it is still so beautiful and the light is warm and clear. This would be a fun painting

Just for fun—an iPad doodle of the glorious view of the sea and the Porto Ercole marina from my window. Even though I stayed behind today to catch up on work (I know tiny tiny violin) it is so great to be here. Putting final touches and editing cover blurbs for @tomdittmer coming memoir Talkin’ Big !

This morning’s view of the Chateau de Barroux, beautiful with the summer coming up behind and over to backlight the buildings and trees. But what has been drilled into us – and to any landscape painter – is not to think of them as buildings and trees but as shapes, masses, and values. So easy but so hard. Anyway i am happy with this one. Normally I am sortakinda happy just if I dont hate it. So if I like it even a little I am regular old happy. Nice to end on a high note. Back to sketching and watercolor for rest of trip… Has been a great workshop with @ianrobertsartist and a great group of fellow painters. .

If you painted it, it wouldn’t look real. Have never seen anything quite like this sky in the #Vaucluse tonight. Is (nearly?) a full moon and the #mistral arrives tomorrow. Don’t know if there is any connection. .

Quick watercolor sketch of the little church in #lebarroux. It is hot as hell here and the mosquitoes ate me alive. Plein airpainting is not for sissies. Now back to the unairconditioned hotel… to beg for ice… Im feeling bold and will ask for 3 cubes tonight instead of the usual two… And yet it is just so great to be here and get to do this. Grateful grateful.
