Officially kicking off summer Reading season and as usual i have a very mixed bag. Here just a sample: #thelibrarybook by @susanorlean given to me by @mollybrownballantine ; #womenrowingnorth by Mary Pipher given me by @hollyejacobs ; #thequeensgambit by Walter Tevis rec eons ago by @jessekornbluth and I’ve sort of been saving it ; and perhaps it is time to re-read that timeless classic #f*ckthat an Honest Meditation by Jason Headley. Beautiful bouquet by @billyhurbaugh Happy summer to all, from the unseasonably chilly #santaynezvalley
Hard to beat purple and green, but then green goes with anything. Irises from the farmers market and a few sprigs of honeysuckle for the table. Old friends for dinner tonight, just the four of us. I love the intimacy of it and the increased likelihood (though with this lot not guarantee) of having one conversation between us – and tonight’s was fascinating. .

This is sort of a corny postcard view but is so pretty right now with the bright green new growth. I keep meaning to paint this again. Did a watercolor years ago. Time for an oil. A bit of weekend inspiration for you … Golly in the blur of last few weeks – travel, Camino, graduation, and family things, I realize I never posted my Easter flowers save for a short video a few weeks ago. More ti come here on Insta and in my next book #californiacookingandsouthernstyle due out next fall from @skyhorsepub !
One of the hardest things some of us can do – or in my case can’t do – is to ask a friend for help. I’ve tried to learn to do that – baby steps mind you – in these last few months, and i have experienced the divine grace in it. It doesn’t have to be a frantic text, it doesn’t have to be a woman – great or otherwise – and I certainly don’t consider myself a “great woman.” But I am a lucky one, and I know I am loved. Thank you. You know who you are.
That is my baby niece and namesake Frances Fuqua addressing the UVa Law class of 2019. She was president of the Student Bar Assn and the awesomeness club. Congratulations to her and to ALL the classes of 2019!!! #proudauntie
A beautiful doorway in 66th Street, Manhattan. One of the advantages of a walking city is appreciating what beauty there is always around us when we can take the time to see. We also of course see sadness and squalor. It’s all part of our shared human experience, isn’t it, the good with the bad, the happy the sad, the cycle, every day a death and a resurrection, and the gift of grace in each moment. Not sure what has me waxing philosophical this Sunday morning! Walking allows us the contemplation that whizzing by does not, and I’m seeing that the Camino my friends and I completed a few weeks ago, is always beginning again. @hollyejacobs @duvallfuqua @ccwilliamsonsr @mollyfroelich @maureenchilton @lesliegraves26 @mossmandanielle @aishashaque @patriciaglass1 @staceyrenker And all my Camino sisters and brother (!) @randallday and inspired by @walk2connect
Would you believe we got all the way to Santiago and the Cathedral was closed?! Under renovation and supposed to reopen May 1. Nope. The pilgrims mass was held instead at the equally beautiful church of St Francis, founded by St F himself, so not exactly a letdown—just different and just as marvelous. .
