Always Do Right

“Always do right. This will gratify some and astonish the rest,” said Mark Twain, who needs no embellishment, and certainly not from me.

Always do right. This will gratify some and astonish the rest.
...

If anybody has anything to add to this, though, we’d all be happy to hear it.

Perhaps it is the arrival of four beautiful, strong, smart, wonderful young girls and their kin at Rancho La Zaca for the weekend that has activated my maternal instincts and the urge to give advice–though none is needed as far as I can see. Now this afternoon might be another story, when their brother/cousin arrives with three of his friends. They are all about to go off to college where untold opportunities for mischief await… We’ll keep you posted…

  1. as far as the bit about college, untold opportunities and mischief, I think this would be a great time to quote the prolific James Taylor in one of his many songs…..”wild with expectation on the edge of the unknown…”

  2. Well now Hazel ain’t you the best for the music memory. As for college & mischief I myself am @ the beach with 3 SMC cronies remembering much mischievousness & we even did some “girl shagging.”

  3. Yeah, Paige, I’m great at trivia…useful stuff, not so much!!! Have fun with SMC bunch and sing a Cold Cut song or three!

  4. My third daughter just graduated from Alabama, others from Wake Forest and UVA. Not being able to drink any form of alcohol in the USA until one is 21 sets up defeat for most students and makes it difficult to “do right”. Some campuses are so restrictive that students hide and binge drink beforehand while others look the other way so that parents and students can enjoy a band and beer together.

As a person who does not even drink a glass of wine nightly, I think the age ought to be 18 for beer and wine so that college students might learn to drink responsibly.

Can’t wait for you to go visit your nieces and nephews on campus….

    1. Anna Ball thank you for this thoughtful comment – gosh I hadn’t even thought about this phrase in the context of drinking – which is always the elephant in the room. When you and I came along the legal age for beer and wine was 18 and we seem to have survived it (I as one who does drink a glass of wine nightly…). My feeling has always been if they are old enough to go to war, they are old enough to drink a beer. Learning to drink responsibly is part of it, too, as you point out.

  5. As my parents told me when I was younger(in college), and as I tell my soon to be 18 year old twin boys, “Remember who you are.” (Hell, I think Mufasa told Simba that, too) It’s simple, yet it means so much. Hopefully all the things we have taught our children over the years stay with them.
